The world was moved to pity when the little Philae spacecraft jumped on Rosetta’s comet into its undoing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the European parent probe, Rosetta, continued to orbit the ‘rubber duck‘ comet with the ineffable name and made amazing discoveries. Is 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko really a messenger from that part of the solar system in which the dwarf planets are orbiting: a baby pluto, so to speak?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Rosetta mission has long since been concluded. Its findings are summarized in this book that also presents impressive images of comet 67P. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<i><br />Im Jahre 1900 bargen

<br />
:-)</div>

On this day, 50 years ago, American pilot Michael Adams became the official 27th U.S. astronaut and shortly afterwards one of the Forgotten Astronauts no longer mentioned in the books.<br />

<br />
Adams had not been a NASA member but was one of the first group of MOL astronauts assigned to training for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory of the U. S. Air Force. Expecting little chance of getting a space flight in this project, he soon asked for a transfer to the X15 program that also Neil Armstrong participated in. For Adams, this may arguably have been the worst decision of his life.<br />
<br />
The account of his ascent to an altitude of more than 80 km, which officially qualified him as another astronaut, and of the subsequent failure of his plane is told in our book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Forgotten-Astronauts-Extended-Spacemen-Remembered/dp/1547184671/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1510774630&sr=8-6&keywords=Forgotten+astronauts">The Forgotten Astronauts</a>". Here follows the little-known report by German TV journalist Heinrich Schiemann that we did not include in our publication, first published in his book "Erlebte Raumfahrt" (Spaceflight Witnessed). The translation of this passage is my own:<br />
<br />
<i>"There was not a single accident with fatal consequences in the entire X15 program until the hundred and ninety-nineth flight. Edwards and North American Aviation were all the more appalled when this flight ended with a crash that killed Mike Adams, an Air Force pilot. The accident happened on November </i><i><i>15, </i>1967. Coincidentally, on that black day I was once again with a television crew in Edwards. We had arrived there two days before the scheduled flight and filmed its preparation on the first day of our stay. Preparing a flight like this meant to meticulously inspect all the vital components and systems of the X15. On the second day, we filmed as the aircraft was mounted beneath an eight-jet B52, between its fuselage and the right-hand inner jet-drive nacelle. Eventually we were present with our camera when, the next day, pilot Mike Adams entered the X15. As with all previous flights, the usual ambulances and fire engines had been placed on the edge of the runway that is pointing towards the bed of Rogers Dry Lake. The takeoff was normal. Then the B52 roared over our heads with the X15 attached to it that was quite small in relation to the bomber's enormous size. Two tracking planes were already in the air. Then the B52 went on its regular course towards the neighbouring state of Nevada. At the ground floor we waited for the return of the X15, expected about half an hour later. Suddenly we heard loudspeaker announcements and watched in surprise as the rescue vehicles, instead of waiting for the X15 to land, returned to the base. At first they only said that the X15 would not return to Edwards but land somewhere else. Then the terrible news arrived: Mike Adams had crashed from a high altitude, meaning he was surely dead. His last words picked up were: "I am in a spin". We could almost painfully feel the shock that had stricken the whole center within an instant. Everyone was stunned. All work in the offices and workshops and on the airfield in front of the halls came to a halt. Thus, after nine years of running this experimental programme, the very event had occurred that had always had to be expected. We noticed immediately that no one was approachable or interested in us any more. After we expressed our condolences, we left immediately.<br /><br />The crash site was quite far away from Edwards, near Johannesburg in California. In the evening, in our motel, we finally saw footage taken by a television crew that been immediately sent to the crash site by helicopter. All you saw was a pile of dented metal sheet lying in the sand. Nearby: the huge engine. Analysis of the flight data received on the ground showed that there had been a malfunction in the power system of the X15 during ascent. It had adversely affected the quality of the telemetry data transmitted to the ground. There had been a deviation in the direction of the plane's longitudinal axis from the direction of the trajectory, and it had been amplified for reasons unknown, perhaps due to an incorrect reading of instruments by Adams, by overstepping the automatic control system.</i></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Thirty seconds after reaching the maximum flight altitude of eighty kilometres and after re-entering the denser layers of the atmosphere, the angle between the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and the direction of its still predominantly ballistic trajectory - at this altitude, atmospheric forces did not yet have a major effect - had assumed a value of ninety degrees. At Mach 5 and at an altitude of seventy kilometres, the X15 entered a spinning state lasting 43 seconds, which led to an up and down movement of the aircraft's fromnt section. As a result of excessive inertial forces to which the machine was subjected, it finally broke apart in the air."</i></div>

Zwei Verfolgerflugzeuge
seinen Tod bedeuten konnte.
hatte, lauteten: »I am in a spin« - »Ich trudele.« Wir spürten fast körperlich
uns interessierte. Nachdem wir unser Beileid ausgesprochen hatten, reisten wir
sofort ab.</i></span></span></div>

<i><span class="Flietext2"><span style="color: black;">Die Absturzstelle lag in größerer Entfernung von Edwards,

This sketch shows another weird draft from the Apollo Applications Program. It is an early design of Skylab - but note the lunar lander attached! Apparently it was not meant to land, though, but to host crew members operating the ATM.<br />

1. "Workshop" (a modified hydrogen tank of an S-4B stage) for crew adaption and microgravity experiment purposes<br />
2. Node adapter and hatch<br />
3. Apollo CSM<br />
4. M&SS - Mapping and Space Research System <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
erworben. Er heiratete nach seiner Anwerbung als NASA-Astronaut.<br /><br />Sein Schicksal und die aktuellen Pressemitteilungen sind in einem Kapitel unseres Buches "<a href="https://www.amazon.de/Die-Vergessenen-Astronauten-Erweiterte-Raumfahrer/dp/1547185996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507289740&sr=8-1&keywords=Vergessenen+astronauten">Die vergessenen Astronauten</a>" näher beschrieben.</div>

C. Williams dies in plane crash<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just four months after Edward Givens drove over the bent of Knapp
Road, C. C. Williams had his final flight on this day, 50 years ago, on
October 5 1967. He had taken Deke Slayton to Kennedy with a new T-38
plane that seemed to be quite a lemon, making trouble already on that
trip. Finding that he was not actually needed at the KSC, Williams
decided to return back to Houston, planning a stop at Mobile to tank and
to pay a visit to his father in the meantime. He only came as f<span class="text_exposed_show">ar as the cross on this map marks that plots his intended course.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The investigation of the accident produced the consequence that from
then on, every newly commissioned T-38 would be thoroughly inspected
before first flying. The decision was well made, and as a result,
Williams was the last NASA astronaut to ever crash with a plane of that
type.</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The crew of Apollo 12 added four stars to their mission batch: Three for each crew member, the fourth for Clifton Williams.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Williams had gained some popularity with the press as the only bachelor
drafted at that time. He married after his assignment as NASA
astronaut.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
His fate including contemporary press releases is recounted in a chapter of our book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Forgotten-Astronauts-Extended-Spacemen-Remembered/dp/1547184671/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1507280835&sr=8-6&keywords=The+Forgotten+astronauts">The Forgotten Astronauts</a>".<br />

<br /><br />One of the more weird proposals of the Apollo Applications Program (AAP) was an Apollo-based manned Mars mission!<br />
The unit is driven by a chemical reaction drive (3) flanked by two S II
nuclear booster units (4, 5). It includes a MEM (Mars Excursion Module,
1), an EEM (Earth Entry Module, 6) and a huge main cabin (2) that
constitute the manned unit (8), also containing a launch engine for the
ascent from Mars (3) and propulsion tanks (7).<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Via "NASA History": <br />
"<i>On this day in 1967, Major Robert Lawrence Jr. became the first African-American to be selected to serve as an astronaut.<br /><br />At that time the United States was developing the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) Program; effectively a reconnaissance satellite with a crew of two. The MOL astronaut corps was selected by the Department of Defense and was almost completely separate from the NASA astronaut corps. Major Lawrence was not only an Air Force instructor pilot, but also earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Ohio State University. During the same month that he completed the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School he was selected in the third group of MOL astronauts. Tragically, Lawrence's career was cut short when the F-104 Starfighter he was flying in crashed on landing on December 8, 1967, at Edwards Air Force Base - less than 6 months after he'd been selected for the MOL program.<br /><br />The MOL program was cancelled two years later - in December 1969 - and the separate Department of Defense astronaut corps ended along with MOL. Many of the MOL astronauts were accepted into the NASA astronaut corps and played a significant role in the Space Shuttle program. Had Lawrence lived, it is likely that he would have been the first African-American in space. (Dr. Guy Bluford, also a U.S. Air Force pilot, was the first African-American in space on STS-8 in August 1983.)<br />In 1997, at the request of the Astronaut Memorial Foundation, the Air Force reviewed Lawrence's records and designated him as an astronaut. On the 30th anniversary of his death, Lawrence's name was added to the Space Mirror Memorial at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.</i>"<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We commemorate this anniversary with the Extended Edition of our non-fiction book "The Forgotten Astronauts", one chapter of which is dedicated to the career and tragic fate of Dr. Lawrence and another to the controversy about his inclusion on the Space Mirror: <br />
